Features Mood of Anxious Optimism
News: In his
opening keynote address at The Kelsey Group's (TKG's) Directory Driven
Commerce conference (DDC2003) last week, Dex Media's CEO George Burnett
characterized the Yellow Pages as "the sexiest business alive." That may
well be true these days from the financial community's point of view.
It may also be true for the numerous vendors, suppliers and other third
parties that were in attendance at this year's event.
The mood at the conference
could be described as one of "anxious optimism," reflecting a cautiously
upbeat attitude among conference attendees. In previous years, attendance
would have been dominated by RBOCs. However, the cast of characters at
DDC2003 reflected the many upheavals and changes in the industry and was
perhaps more diverse than at any previous Kelsey Group event.
CMRs, search providers, vendors and suppliers, research firms, consultants,
the press, as well as incumbent and independent publishers were present
both on stage and in the exhibit hall. All were seeking to get a fix on
this resilient industry, which has seemingly weathered the economic turbulence
of the recession, but which also faces numerous challenges going forward.
