Planet Discover Offers Structured Local Search to IYPs
Greg Sterling , 3/26/2004
Internet Yellow Pages (IYP) will increasingly face usage challenges
from search engines and vertical directories. One response
is to upgrade the user interface and site functionality, which
a number of leading IYP sites have recently done. TKG has
applauded that move. Yet, there is still a risk that without
more content depth and breadth, IYP sites could see future
usage limited to business-name lookups. Thus an increasingly
crowded field of technology and platform vendors has emerged
to help IYP enhance and improve its competitive position.
Among them is Planet Discover, which has developed a kind
of hybrid search-directory platform called Search Publisher.
It has the capacity to integrate business listings from the
database with "local" Web search results from publisher-selected
Web sites, and can also support numerous ad formats. Essentially,
the platform has the capacity to turn IYPs into what might
be described as local search portals.
