Yahoo! Turns Mapping into Local Search

Summary: Yesterday, Yahoo! introduced a new mapping feature called "SmartView." It changes static mapping into a dynamic new approach to local search and geotargeting. Mapping on the Internet is a huge traffic generator, but few sites have done much with it to date. Some have sought to provide more context to mapping and make it more interactive. Verizon's SuperPages has gone the farthest in this category. However, SmartView has now set a new standard in terms of functionality and usability.

SmartView is another step in Yahoo!'s (and now Overture's) evolving local strategy. It brings together content from many areas of Yahoo!'s site, from Travel to Movies and Yellow Pages, among others. It also has the potential of offering a highly effective way for advertisers to geotarget consumers, and is an even more reliable method for doing so than conventional keyword search.
